Scope 3 in bulk liquid storage: Dutch logistics group’s first carbon baseline

The Challenge
Without a reliable carbon baseline, the company couldn’t confidently answer customer emissions questions or use EcoVadis as a driver for improvement.

Project Objectives

01
Build a full Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon inventory using a methodology that works for bulk liquid storage, not just manufacturing.
02
Create a two-year dataset that enables year-on-year comparison as throughput volumes and product mix change.
03
Continue improving the EcoVadis score in parallel, using carbon data as evidence across the Environmental and Procurement pillars.

Nexio Projects' solutions

01
EcoVadis consulting and implementation
Multi-cycle EcoVadis support: gap analysis, action plan and guided assessment completion across the 2021 and 2023 assessment cycles. Score moved from 62 to 72.
02
Scope 3 assessment with extra data collection support
Full Scope 3 assessment for the 2024 data year, with dedicated data collection support to address the product-mix variability and flow complexity specific to bulk liquid storage operations.
03
GHG emissions inventory across all scopes
Complete GHG Protocol inventory across all three scopes, using sector-specific emission factors and a methodology designed to be repeatable annually.

Key Outcomes

The client has a sustainability programme that continues to cater for ongoing carbon reporting needs and EcoVadis requirements, as well as customer carbon data requests and regulatory reporting obligations.
EcoVadis score improved
A 10-point improvement achieved through structured consulting support. Score trajectory maintained across multiple cycles. Carbon data evidence now strengthens the Environmental and Procurement pillars for future assessments.
Full Scope 1, 2 and 3 baseline in place
First-ever complete GHG inventory. A second dataset for 2025 on the same methodology. Two years of data, one consistent framework. The company can now report a carbon trajectory, not just a snapshot.
Scope 3 methodology validated
Extra data collection support resolved the product-mix variability challenge specific to the sector. The methodology is documented, auditable and reproducible for annual cycles without starting from scratch.
Customer carbon data requests now answerable
Carbon disclosure to customers requiring emissions data from their supply chain can be delivered with auditable, methodology-grounded numbers. Science based target development is the next horizon on that path.
