The Road To A Mature Sustainability Program
The Nexio Projects team was called in to consult on the case. Carmeuse is a global company and had been working with the EcoVadis assessment at group level for several years. However, the Americas’ score was behind on Europe and the company was unsure on how to get the Americas on the same level.
About the company
Founded in 1860 | Global manufacturer of lime and limestone products | USA & Canada
“Having outside council for the setup of the sustainability program is very valuable – having someone else look at what we’re doing, showing us the improvements that we haven’t thought about.”
Carmeuse is a privately owned Belgian company evolving from a calcium-based mineral provider into a company that continues to add integrated services. Carmeuse and its subsidiaries offer equipment and engineering services to optimize customers’ processes, improve safety, and provide reliable supply.
Carmeuse Americas has become one of the leading suppliers of lime, limestone and other mineral products, equipment, and engineering solutions in The Americas region. We had the pleasure of speaking to Chris Imbrogno, Environmental Director of the Americas and legal researcher, Patrick Dongmo Tsague about the work they have been doing with their team to improve Carmeuse’s sustainability program.
Carmeuse turned to Nexio Projects for support to further develop their sustainability program as the team quickly realized that it was a complex puzzle to solve.
Carmeuse wanted to make improvements to its overall sustainability strategy, rather than have individual pieces that didn’t contribute to the bigger picture.
Nexio Projects collaborated with the dedicated team at Carmeuse, starting with the completion of a gap analysis, which resulted in an overview of the missing pieces in the sustainability program of Carmeuse America.
One clear result is that the company went from a Bronze medal to the EcoVadis Silver medal. The score has increased tremendously over a short period of time.
Due to Carmeuse’s size and global reach, there were many moving parts and it proved difficult to gain a comprehensive and centralized overview of the main challenges at hand.
The program involved many stakeholders from different departments and tied together existing programs within the company. Through their efforts, Carmeuse clearly showed a commitment to sustainability.
The team wanted to take a holistic approach to the program to make sure it would make a strong impact within the company.
In addition to this, Nexio Projects was an obvious choice to support Carmeuse throughout their sustainability journey, as their global partnership with EcoVadis enabled them to build on a proven and robust framework.
Carmeuse had been working with EcoVadis for a few years and had used it to improve their sustainability program to the best of their ability. However, the results of the assessment did not match with their desired outcome.
The company was ready and prepared to make a real commitment toward sustainability but wanted to direct the capital and other resources where it would make the most impact. That’s why they decided to engage with Nexio Projects to make sure they were taking the appropriate steps.
Internally, many efforts were being made to improve the company’s sustainability initiatives, reduce negative footprint and maximize positive impact. However, the company struggled to demonstrate those improvements. The effort did not reflect the results which left the team disheartened, even though the internal commitment to sustainability was strong.
“With your help we’ve refined how we describe policies and how we document some of the programs that were already in place” – PATRICK DONGMO TSAGUE
The solution we offered
The Nexio Projects team was called in to consult on the case. Carmeuse is a global company and had been working with the EcoVadis assessment at the group level for several years. However, the Americas’ score was behind on Europe and the company was unsure on how to get the Americas on the same level.
Nexio Projects collaborated with the dedicated team at Carmeuse, starting with the completion of a gap analysis, which resulted in an overview of the existing pieces of the puzzle, as well as the ones that were still missing in the sustainability program of Carmeuse America.
After identifying the gaps, the team worked on what we call an implementation. Policies and procedures were written and put into place. With the help of our experts, the sustainability program was taken to the next level.
One clear result is that the company went from a Bronze medal to the EcoVadis Silver medal. The score has increased tremendously over a short period of time. This speaks to both parties’ dedication to sustainability and the groundwork that was laid by the gap analysis.
Chris and Patrick both agree that one of the main outcomes of working with Nexio Projects is a sense of clarity around the sustainability program. They now know how to document their efforts, how to communicate to suppliers and how to make the desired impact.
It’s led to improvements of the EcoVadis score, but also the improvement of the sustainability processes, through:
- Better documentation;
- Increased awareness and understanding of corporate sustainability;
- Improved communication process;
- A more mature sustainability program.
Many companies these days are working on sustainability and Carmeuse’s clients are no exception. Customers would regularly send surveys to ask about their sustainability efforts. Previously, the team were answering them individually. As you can imagine, this exercise proved to be quite time-consuming.
Now that the proper documentation and a cover letter is in place, this can be easily sent to requesting parties. In about 80-90% of the time that suffices, saving the team a lot of time.
“They asked the question; we have the answer the next day.”
Additionally, having EcoVadis as a 3rd party ranking system gives Carmeuse additional validation for its efforts. Being able to share the scorecard gives insight into the company’s sustainability performance.
