In October of 2018 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published a special report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and set out the critical importance of carbon neutrality with a simple call to action: “…the world needs to build a net zero global economy by 2050”.
Businesses as much as governments need to take action to help achieve this goal. Measuring your company’s emissions and working towards reducing them over time will not only provide cost-saving and efficiency improvement opportunities, but will also put you in a climate leadership position and mitigate the risk of future regulations that tax carbon emissions. We encourage all businesses to use this as an opportunity to differentiate yourself in the market, motivate employees, and demonstrate to investors that you are managing and mitigating climate risks.
Nexio Projects specialises in helping companies manage their emissions, from measurement to going carbon neutral. Our experts and specialist partners work closely with you to simplify and streamline the process as much as possible. This ensures that you are able to focus on your core business while we work hard to unlock the value that climate leadership can provide.
Nexio Projects has developed an easy to understand process to help you manage your emissions:
As a first step towards managing your emissions we will help you measure your greenhouse gas footprint according to the widely accepted Greenhouse Gas Protocol. We achieve this through an easy to understand step by step process and provide flexibility by either using our self-developed Nexio calculation tools or those of our software partners.
Your Nexio GHG Assessment Report will show you where your emissions hotspots are and will provide the insight needed to start reducing emissions.
We can also provide you with a Data Management Plan if required for assurance purposes.
Once you have measured your emissions our engineers will work closely with you to identify reduction opportunities and an action plan for implementing them.
We use a methodical approach and start with the ‘low-hanging fruit’. Our various experts in supply chains, energy, transport, etc. will identify areas that require further research and work on developing realistic and practical solutions that will result in genuine emission reductions.
The Nexio GHG Emissions Reduction Plan will provide the roadmap that your company needs to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ultimately reduce emissions.
Every organisation should strive to become carbon neutral as soon as possible. Nexio Projects will develop a Carbon Neutral Strategy for you to help achieve this as quickly and as economically as possible through a combination of operational initiatives and carbon offsetting.
Certification can be achieved through an independent 3rd party so that you can market yourself as a certified Carbon Neutral Company and inspire others to do the same.
My company is not measuring emissions yet and we don’t know where or how to start?
We at Nexio Projects aim to Simplify Sustainability, including the measuring of emissions. As a first step, we will send you a brief and easy to complete Preliminary GHG Emissions Questionnaire free of charge. This will allow us to determine what your main objectives and sources of emissions are. We will then advise you on the categories of emissions that you should include in your inventory and what the next steps should be.
How can my company become carbon neutral if it is not possible to completely reduce our emissions?
By purchasing what is known as carbon offset credits. Carbon offsetting is a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for emissions made elsewhere. The revenue from the purchases of carbon offset credits are invested in projects elsewhere in the world that either sequester, reduce or prevent the emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases. Examples of these projects include reforestation initiatives, renewable energy projects, and providing efficient cookstoves to rural communicates. In other words, the purchase of a 1 tonne carbon credit offsets 1 tonne of carbon dioxide (or the equivalent in other greenhouse gases) emitted by your company.
Can’t we just buy carbon credits to become carbon neutral? Why must we also reduce our emissions?
The purchase of carbon credits should be seen as a last resort or as a way to internally put a price on your emissions to create an incentive to reduce them over time. The more you reduce emissions each year, the less carbon credits you’ll need to buy. Carbon offsetting should only be used for emissions that have not been reduced yet or for emissions that are impossible to eliminate (e.g. for unavoidable flying).
